Ergo-Pedic iTilt vs. Ergomotion RIO 5.0 (2026): Incline Tilt or Head-and-Foot — Which Adjustable Bed Should You Buy?

Ergo-Pedic iTilt vs. Ergomotion RIO 5.0 (2026): Incline Tilt or Head-and-Foot — Which Adjustable Bed Should You Buy?

The Ergo-Pedic iTilt and the Ergomotion RIO 5.0 are the two adjustable beds Bedplanet customers buy most. Both raise your head and feet, both have Zero Gravity, massage, and under-bed lighting, and both come in Split King for couples. But they work in very different ways. One folds the bed at the waist. The other can tilt the whole sleep surface into a gentle incline.

That one difference decides which bed is right for you. In this guide we compare the iTilt vs. RIO 5.0 side by side: how they move, features, heights, weight capacity, current Bedplanet pricing, and who each bed is built for.

Quick Answer

  • Choose the Ergo-Pedic iTilt if you want to sleep elevated all night — for acid reflux, snoring, or congestion — and you sleep on your side or stomach. Its patented tilt raises your head and chest without bending you at the waist.

  • Choose the Ergomotion RIO 5.0 if you mostly sleep flat or in Zero Gravity, sit up in bed to read or watch TV, want lumbar support, or need a zero-clearance base for a platform bed. It also costs less.

  • Couples with different needs: both come in Split King, so each person controls their own side.

The Big Difference: Tilt vs. Fold

A standard adjustable bed like the RIO 5.0 raises the head section, which bends the bed (and you) at the hips. That's great for sitting up, reading, and Zero Gravity. But when you want to sleep with your head raised, a folded bed pushes you onto your back. Many side sleepers end up sliding down or waking up with hip and lower-back pressure.

The iTilt adds a patented tilt function (USPTO US-9642757-B2) that angles the entire sleep surface 0° to 12°, head higher than feet, while the mattress stays flat. Your head and chest stay raised through the night, and you can still sleep on your side or stomach. For the science behind sleeping at an angle, see Incline Sleep 101.

The RIO 5.0 does not have a whole-bed incline. It does have Active Head Tilt, which tips the top of the head section forward to support your neck when you're sitting up — useful for reading or TV, but it's a different feature from the iTilt's incline.

Ergo-Pedic iTilt: Best for Sleeping Elevated All Night

Ergo-Pedic iTilt incline therapy adjustable bed in a bedroom

The Ergo-Pedic iTilt is Bedplanet's best-selling adjustable bed, and incline therapy is the reason. Beyond the tilt, you get:

  • Incline and Tilt Chaise positions: tilt the whole bed for sleep, or combine tilt with head and foot lift to take weight off your lower back while you relax.

  • Three presets: Zero Gravity, Anti-Snore, and TV, plus two programmable buttons.

  • Dual-zone massage: separate head and foot motors, three intensities each, with a 10/20/30-minute timer and one-button stop.

  • Higher weight capacity: 800 lbs in Queen and 900 lbs in Split King, including the mattress.

  • Battery backup so you can return the bed flat during a power outage.

Best for: acid reflux and GERD, snoring, sinus congestion, side and stomach sleepers who want to stay elevated, and anyone who has tried sleeping propped up on pillows and hated it. See our guides to the best adjustable beds for acid reflux and GERD and adjustable beds for sleep apnea.

Keep in mind: the iTilt sits 14.5" high with 8" of floor clearance, so it's a drop-in base rather than a low-profile, zero-clearance one. It isn't offered in Full or standard King, and it doesn't list USB ports or lumbar support.

Ergomotion RIO 5.0: Best All-Around Head-and-Foot Base

Ergomotion RIO 5.0 adjustable bed with lumbar support

The Ergomotion RIO 5.0 is our top-selling RIO and the base we recommend most for everyday comfort. Its standout features:

  • Lumbar support adjustable at the push of a button — a real help if you have lower-back pain or sit up in bed for long stretches.

  • Active Head Tilt for neck support while reading or watching TV, no pillow stack needed.

  • Wall Saver keeps your nightstand within reach as the bed raises.

  • USB-A and USB-C charging built into the base.

  • Zero clearance with 0–12" adjustable legs, so it works inside a platform bed, in your existing frame, or on legs.

Best for: back sleepers, people with lower-back pain, TV and reading in bed, platform-bed owners, and shoppers who want premium features for about $600–$1,000 less than the iTilt.

Keep in mind: the RIO 5.0 can't incline the whole sleep surface. If you need to sleep elevated on your side, the iTilt is the better fit. For the full lineup, read our Ergomotion RIO 1.0–6.0 comparison.

Buying Tips for Either Bed

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Ergo-Pedic iTilt and the Ergomotion RIO 5.0?
The iTilt can tilt the entire sleep surface up to 12° so you can sleep elevated on your side or stomach. The RIO 5.0 is a head-and-foot base that adds lumbar support, Active Head Tilt, USB charging, and a zero-clearance design at a lower price.

Is the iTilt better for acid reflux than a regular adjustable bed?
For many people, yes. Sleeping with your head and chest raised may help reduce nighttime reflux, and the iTilt keeps you inclined without bending you at the waist, which can add pressure on your stomach. Talk with your doctor about the right angle for you.

Can you sleep on your side on the iTilt?
Yes. That's the main advantage of its tilt function — your whole body is on a gentle slope, so you can sleep on your side or stomach while staying elevated.

Does the RIO 5.0 have a tilt feature?
The RIO 5.0 has Active Head Tilt, which angles the top of the head section to support your neck when sitting up. It does not incline the whole bed like the iTilt.

Which has a higher weight capacity?
The iTilt: 800 lbs in Queen and 900 lbs in Split King (450 per Twin XL), including the mattress. The RIO 5.0 is rated for 750 lbs.

Will either bed fit in my platform bed?
The RIO 5.0 is zero clearance and fits most platform beds. The iTilt is a drop-in base with 8" of floor clearance that fits most standard bed frames.

Do both come in Split King?
Yes. Both are available in Split King and Split Cal King, so each side moves independently.

Final Thoughts

If you want to sleep elevated — especially on your side — the Ergo-Pedic iTilt is the bed to get. Its patented tilt does something no standard head-and-foot base can. If you want the best everyday adjustable base for back support, reading, and TV, with a lower price and a platform-friendly design, the Ergomotion RIO 5.0 is the smarter buy.
