Tempur-Pedic Firmness Guide (2026): Soft vs. Medium vs. Medium Hybrid vs. Firm — Which Feel Should You Choose?
You've decided on a Tempur-Pedic. Now comes the hard part: which feel do you pick?
Tempur-Pedic makes its mattresses in four feels: Soft, Medium, Medium Hybrid, and Firm. They all use the same TEMPUR-Material® foam. But they feel very different when you lie down.
Pick the wrong one and you could wake up with sore shoulders or a stiff back. Pick the right one and you may never think about your mattress again.
We help shoppers choose a Tempur-Pedic feel every day at Bedplanet. This guide makes it simple.
Quick Answer: Which Tempur-Pedic Firmness Should You Get?
- Side sleepers: Soft or Medium
- Back sleepers: Medium or Medium Hybrid
- Stomach sleepers: Firm
- Combination sleepers (you move around): Medium Hybrid
- Couples who can't agree: Medium or Medium Hybrid
- Heavier sleepers (over about 230 lbs): Firm or Medium Hybrid
- Lighter sleepers (under about 130 lbs): Soft or Medium
Not sure? Medium is the safest choice for most people. It's Tempur-Pedic's classic middle feel. If you want Medium with a little more bounce, Medium Hybrid comes in every Tempur-Pedic model.
The Four Tempur-Pedic Feels, Explained
Soft: "Sink in and get hugged"
The Soft feel lets your shoulders and hips sink deeper into the foam. That takes pressure off the parts of your body that press hardest into the bed.
Feels like: lying in a cushioned cradle.
Best for: side sleepers, lighter sleepers, and anyone with sore shoulders or hips.
Skip it if: you sleep on your stomach or weigh more than about 230 lbs. You may sink too far.
Medium: "The just-right middle"
Medium is the classic Tempur-Pedic feel. You still get that slow, body-hugging contour. But you sit a little more "on top" of the bed than with Soft.
Feels like: support with a soft layer of give.
Best for: back sleepers, side sleepers, and couples who sleep in different positions.
Skip it if: you only sleep on your stomach.
Medium Hybrid: "Tempur comfort with a little bounce"
The Medium Hybrid is close to Medium in comfort. The difference is underneath. It adds a layer of coils (springs) below the foam.
Those coils make it easier to roll over and get out of bed. They also add a bit of bounce and more airflow. If you've slept on a spring mattress your whole life, this feel will seem the most familiar.
Feels like: a Medium with more "lift" and a springier edge.
Best for: combination sleepers, back sleepers, people who feel "stuck" in all-foam beds, and heavier sleepers who want a supportive feel that's not too hard.
Skip it if: you want the most motion control. All-foam models keep the bed a bit stiller when your partner moves.
Firm: "Support first"
The Firm feel keeps your body more on top of the mattress. You still get some contour, but much less sink.
Feels like: a solid, supportive surface with a thin cushion of comfort.
Best for: stomach sleepers, heavier sleepers, and back sleepers who like a firm bed.
Skip it if: you sleep on your side and weigh under about 180 lbs. It may feel too hard on your shoulders.

How to Choose by Sleep Position
Side sleepers
When you sleep on your side, your shoulder and hip carry most of your weight. You need a bed that lets them sink in so your spine stays straight.
Our pick: TEMPUR-ProAdapt® Soft. If you want even more pressure relief, step up to the LuxeAdapt® Soft. Heavier side sleepers often do better on Medium.
Back sleepers
Back sleepers need support under the lower back so it doesn't sag. You also want a little give so your hips aren't pushed up.
Our pick: TEMPUR-ProAdapt® Medium or Medium Hybrid.
Stomach sleepers
On your stomach, your hips can sink and bend your lower back. A firmer bed keeps you level.
Our pick: TEMPUR-ProAdapt® Firm. For more luxury, try the LuxeAdapt® Firm.
Combination sleepers
If you change positions all night, you need a bed that's easy to move on. Coils help.
Our pick: any Medium Hybrid. The Adapt® Medium Hybrid is the best value. The ProAdapt® Medium Hybrid is the best all-around.
How Body Weight Changes the Feel
The same mattress feels softer to a heavier person and firmer to a lighter person. That's because more weight presses deeper into the foam.
| Your Weight | How Tempur Feels to You | Good Starting Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Under 130 lbs | Firmer than the label | Soft or Medium |
| 130 to 230 lbs | About like the label | Pick by sleep position (above) |
| Over 230 lbs | Softer than the label | Medium Hybrid or Firm |
These are general guides, not hard rules. Comfort is personal. The best test is lying on the bed yourself.
Do You Sleep Hot? Choose Your Model, Then Your Feel
Firmness and cooling are two different choices. If you wake up warm, start with a Breeze model and then pick a feel:
- TEMPUR-ProBreeze® comes in Medium and Medium Hybrid.
- TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze® comes in Soft, Medium Hybrid, and Firm.
A Medium Hybrid also helps a little on its own, since the coils let more air move through the bed. Learn more in ProBreeze vs. LuxeBreeze and Best Mattress for Hot Sleepers.
Choosing a Feel as a Couple
Most couples land on Medium or Medium Hybrid. It's the feel that works for the widest range of sleepers.
Still can't agree? A Split King is two Twin XL mattresses side by side. Ask our team about pairing two different feels, so each of you gets the bed you like. Add a TEMPUR-Ergo® adjustable base and each side can raise and lower on its own too.

4 Mistakes to Avoid When Picking a Tempur-Pedic Feel
1. Judging the bed in 30 seconds
TEMPUR-Material® responds slowly to your body heat and weight. Lie in your normal sleep position for at least 10 minutes before you decide.
2. Choosing "Firm" because you think it's better for your back
Firmer is not always better. A bed that's too firm can push on your hips and shoulders and leave a gap under your lower back. Support comes from keeping your spine straight, not from hardness.
3. Forgetting the break-in period
New foam can feel a bit firmer for the first few weeks. It also feels firmer in a cool room. Give your new mattress time before you judge it.
4. Ignoring your pillow
The right feel can still feel wrong with the wrong pillow. Side sleepers usually need a higher pillow. Back and stomach sleepers usually need a lower one. Tempur-Pedic makes both, like the TEMPUR-Adapt® ProHi (higher) and ProLo (lower).
Does Firmness Matter on an Adjustable Base?
Every Tempur-Pedic feel works on a TEMPUR-Ergo® adjustable base. But on a raised base, a softer bed can feel a little softer at the bend. Many adjustable-bed owners like Medium or Medium Hybrid for that reason.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most popular Tempur-Pedic firmness?
Medium is Tempur-Pedic's classic, middle-of-the-road feel. It suits back sleepers, many side sleepers, and most couples, which makes it a common first choice.
Is Tempur-Pedic Medium Hybrid softer or firmer than Medium?
They feel close in comfort. The Medium Hybrid adds coils, so it has more bounce and is easier to move on. Some people say it feels a touch firmer because you sit more on top.
Is Tempur-Pedic Firm too hard?
For stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers, Firm usually feels supportive, not hard. For lighter side sleepers, it can feel too firm on the shoulders.
Which Tempur-Pedic is best for back pain?
Many people with back pain do well on Medium or Medium Hybrid, because they balance support and pressure relief. Everyone is different, so talk to your doctor about your back, and try the bed in person if you can.
Does a Tempur-Pedic get softer over time?
New foam often feels a little firmer at first and relaxes over the first few weeks. After that, Tempur-Pedic is known for holding its shape. See How Long Does a Tempur-Pedic Mattress Really Last?
Can I add softness later if my Tempur-Pedic is too firm?
Yes. A topper like the TEMPUR-Adapt® 3" Topper adds a soft layer on top. Read our TEMPUR-Adapt Topper review.
Can I try Tempur-Pedic firmness in Las Vegas?
Yes. Visit the Bedplanet showroom in Las Vegas and try the Tempur-Pedic feels we have on the floor, side by side.
