Naturepedic's Non-Toxic Approach

Why Non-Toxic Matters in Your Mattress

You spend roughly a third of your life on your mattress — and your children spend even more. Yet most conventional mattresses are built from petroleum-based polyurethane foam and treated with chemicals that can off-gas into your bedroom for years. With well over 85,000 chemicals approved by the EPA for use in the United States — most never tested for long-term health effects — knowing what's inside your mattress matters.

That's why we carry Naturepedic. Founded in 2003 by environmental engineer Barry Cik after he couldn't find a safe crib mattress for his first grandchild, Naturepedic exists to remove harmful chemicals from mattresses and bedding.

An Honest Definition of "Non-Toxic"

Naturepedic takes a refreshingly honest, anti-greenwashing stance: nothing is truly "chemical-free," because every substance on earth is a chemical — even apples and bananas contain trace amounts of naturally occurring formaldehyde and arsenic. Instead of making absolute claims, Naturepedic anchors every "non-toxic" and "organic" claim to independent third-party certification standards and rigorous internal research. They deliberately avoid marketing terms like "chemical-free" or "100% non-toxic" that sound good but can't be scientifically supported.

What Naturepedic Leaves Out

Naturepedic products are made without the problem materials found in conventional mattresses: no polyurethane foam (including memory foam and so-called "soy" or "plant-based" foams, which are mostly polyurethane), no flame-retardant chemicals, no fiberglass, no vinyl, no phthalate plasticizers, no industrial adhesives, and no intentionally added PFAS "forever chemicals," which have been linked to cancer risk, immune effects, and hormone disruption.

Polyurethane foam deserves special mention: it's made with toxic inputs like toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and is highly flammable — which is exactly why conventional manufacturers must add flame-retardant chemicals to meet flammability laws. Remove the foam, and you remove the need for the chemicals.

What Naturepedic Uses Instead

Naturepedic builds with natural and organic materials wherever possible: GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool, certified organic latex (roughly 95% pure rubber-tree sap, certified to GOLS and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1), FSC-certified wood, and — for waterproof baby mattresses — a food-grade polyethylene surface now made from non-GMO sugarcane. Naturepedic pioneered the first certified organic waterproof crib mattress using this approach, replacing the vinyl and PFAS treatments that once covered virtually every crib mattress.

For little ones, Naturepedic goes a step further: because roughly 6% of people have a latex allergy, Naturepedic uses no latex at all in any baby, crib, or kids products. Latex-free adult options are available too.

Backed by Independent Certifications

Every claim is verified by independent third-party organizations, including:

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) — covers the entire supply chain with physical factory inspections; recognized by the USDA National Organic Program. Naturepedic uses only GOTS-allowed materials for everything made in its facility.
  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) — certifies organic latex from tree to finished foam.
  • MADE SAFE — screens products against a database of 6,500 materials and chemicals of concern.
  • GREENGUARD Gold — laboratory testing for low chemical emissions (off-gassing).
  • EWG Verified — the Environmental Working Group's strict health and transparency standard.
  • UL Formaldehyde Free, FSC, Organic Content Standard, Vegan Certified, Green America — plus membership in the Organic Trade Association's Fraud Prevention Program.

The Bottom Line

Organic, safer sleep doesn't mean "chemical-free" — it means meaningfully reducing unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals to within the world's most rigorous consensus standards, verified by independent certifiers. That's the standard every Naturepedic product we sell is held to.
