Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Perfomance Copper II Mattress Review

Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid

Sealy is well known for its Posturepedic collection and was at one time its own line, nowadays Posturepedic technology is incorporated in nearly every model they make. In their high-end models, Posturepedic tech targets the heaviest part of your body, which sits at the middle third of the bed.

In the Sealy hybrid line, Posturepedic technology uses a higher density of coils in the central third of the mattress, where more coils per square foot are placed into the bed. They use the same coils but arrange them in a way to provide greater support in the central part using a particular pattern that leaves less space between the loops. By doing so, they get 20% more coils it the same amount of space. This higher level of support and firmness at the center can make a big difference. Plus, this makes the center much less likely to sag. It is a subtle, but notable difference, many people appreciate.

Sealy Hybrid Mattresses

Sealy has three types of mattresses- innerspring, memory foam, and hybrid, which is their newest line introduced in 2018. Those three types are broken down into three collections- Essential, Performance, and Premium. The Copper II belongs to the Performance Hybrid line.

Typically, these mattresses have a few things in common. The bottom half looks like the innerspring Response line and the upper section looks like the memory foam Conform line. In their bottom section, these hybrid mattresses also have the Sealy-developed Duraflex edge. This features two rows of smaller, firmer coils that circle the perimeter of the mattress to strengthen the edges. Above the main coils in the base that provide zoned support is a sheet of Comfort Flex micro coils that conform to the body and provide extra support.

In the upper section, three layers of conforming foam and a smooth, stretchy cover create a luxurious appearance.

Inside that top section of memory foam, two different types of foam are used. The first is two layers of gel-infused memory foam, Sealy’s Comfort Sense Foam, which responds better to the unique shape of each body. The second is Sealy Immersion Advanced Foam. This is used for the top layer and offers chill cooling technology, has a slower response, and enhanced airflow.

As you may have put together at this point, the Copper II has a slightly firmer feel than the Kelburn II or the Gold or Silver Chills. Instead of a layer of Extra Soft Foam, the Copper employs an extra layer of firm support foam and a thin base of high-density polyfoam. While these alterations may not seem significantly different, they do contribute to the bed’s unique feel as compared to the other Performance Hybrid- the Kelburn II.

About the Copper II

The Sealy® Posturepedic Performance Hybrid Copper II mattress is the successor to the Consumer Reports top-rated mattress, the Sealy® Posturepedic Hybrid Trust Cushion Firm mattress. A few things changed that make the mattress more supportive and much more comfortable. The Copper II mattress pairs Sealy’s Ultra Firm Foam with SealySupport, ComfortSense, and Immersion Chill foams. This combination ensures a plush but supportive mattress that will feel like you are sleeping on a cloud, while still cradling and lifting your spine.

The UltraStretch High-Loft Knit cover with smooth waterfall construction feels cool when you first lay down and was designed to be lightweight, durable, breathable, and very soft to the touch to help create a better body-hugging sensation. This fabric, along with the breathable side panels, help you sleep comfortably and a little cooler the whole night through. This mattress is offered both plush and firm options.

Copper II Features

  1. DuraFlex Coil Edge System- A high-density flexible coil border surrounds the mattress for better edge support with a more usable sleeping surface and improved durability.
  2. Sealy® Moisture Wick- The cover fabric is designed to draw moisture away from your body during the night, helping to keep you more comfortable.
  3. Sealy® Chill- Cool-to-the-touch technologies help promote a comfortable sleeping environment.
  4. Individually wrapped coils- Encasing allows each coil to move independently. This targets support and reduces motion transfer. The encased coil system responds to the natural curves and alignment of your spine.
  5. Gel Memory Foam Top Layer- Conforming memory foam with gel is added for additional flexible, durable support.
  6. Zoned Support- In the center zone, nearly 20% more coils are placed for even better support where you need it most. The Sealy® Posturepedic Hybrid Performance Copper II Plush Mattress features a coil count of up to 1000.

What People Are Saying

The Copper II comes with several good reviews as a firm mattress for back sleepers and the like. It doesn’t usually suit side or stomach sleepers, and in both models, it does run firmer than the Kelburn II. And if you’ve read the other reviews, you know this more firm feeling is common for a memory foam mattress over a traditional pillowtop.

Elizabeth D on Overstock.Com said-

“Really good night's sleep--very comfortable. [...I]t has resolved a lot of aches and pains from our prior mattress (definitely worn out), and I place a high value on a good night's sleep. I wouldn't have purchased it if I hadn't read very good reviews[...]. [...] So far, it seems to be holding up extremely well. We bought the [softer] firmness, not the harder one because I read a number of views indicating that the really firm mattress was too much. I am really happy with the level of firmness. If the mattress continues to hold up, I will consider this money really well spent!”

It is important to note that memory foam mattresses do tend to be a bit warmer than innerspring mattresses as well. There are cooling options available and this mattress is made with a bit of cooling technology in the cover to cut down on that.  Additionally, while some customers have noted a smell, that typically goes away on its own and if it doesn’t that isn’t normal and may not be the result of the mattress manufacturer.

One thing we did see often were Sealy repeat customers returning to the brand because they enjoyed it so much. Take Teresa from US-Mattress who purchased the plush option for example-

“I like the Sealy Posturpedic brand so well that I went with a hybrid bed from their line. I spent hours looking at my options and this one is a good choice. It is firm below the plush feel from the various foam layers. This means I relax and fall asleep smoothly with no tossing and turning. It is thicker than my old mattress (13.5") but all of my sheets still fit. I love it and the Sealy brand!”

This mattress has been good for some side sleepers like Kiki who reviewed it on JC Penny saying-

“Perfect bed for a side sleeper. [...] I had tried the Copper II [...] in a number of stores but was hesitant to purchase a hybrid since they are new in 2018. However, the first night I slept in it was heavenly. It was the first time in a long time that I slept through the night and did not wake up in pain. I would definitely recommend this bed for side and back sleepers. Oh, I sleep very hot and did not wake up hot at all.”

Another customer on US-Mattress said-

“Great mattress, very comfortable. We did experience ‘off-gassing’ and I still smell it after a few weeks. The mattress itself is very comfortable it is soft and conforms to your body you do not feel the shifting of the other person when sleeping. It is not hot and quite comfortable.”

As you’ve now read, the chemical smell should only persist for a few days and if you have issues it could be the result of improper storage or a product issue. You should contact us if you purchase one from us and this occurs.

Another great experience was from Lisa who reviewed the mattress on US-Mattress, saying-

“I paid attention to other reviews and waited a month before arriving in my opinion and... I love this mattress. It is our first “hybrid” and the first experience with even a layer of memory foam. We are not hot. We are comfortable. We are impressed! So glad we purchased this mattress.”

And again, you’ll see that Sealy mattresses impress many so much that they seek them out. Dennis on US-Mattress said-

“Slept on a Sealy Posturepedic mattress at a hotel once and loved it, so when it was time to replace our mattress, we checked Consumer Reports and picked the best Sealy mattress that sounded like the one we remembered. Now that we have slept on it for several weeks, we could recommend it without reservation.”

Amazon also shows many positive reviews of the Copper II mattress and several customers there profess its benefits to back and some side sleepers. Jeremy on Amazon said it “Feels great, came on time, and feels like it is made well,” while Doris Fayez gave it five out of five stars and said- “[It’s a] really good product.”

One of the best reviews came from Shannan on Amazon, she said-

“Life-Changing Comfort! I cannot believe how wonderful this mattress is. I've heard that the right mattress can change your life and now I know it's true. I sleep better than I have for many years and wake up feeling rested and with no backache. I was a little worried that "firm" might be like sleeping on a board, but it is not at all like that. [It’s] very supportive but is also soft and comfortable. I have always heard that Sealy Posturepedic was a great brand and now I know why.”

Another fantastic review came from Margaret Thomas-

“I am so grateful for how well made this mattress is! It's a dream come true! I haven't been able to sleep in a bed for a couple of years. I have really bad knees and really bad backaches.

Not only can I sleep on this, but it’s also comfortable! My legs don't hurt all night, I don't have to get up in the middle of the night because my back just won't let me lie there another second, it's amazing! I've had more uninterrupted sleep since we started using this than I've had in months!

It's cool, too. I like moisture-wicking because I hate to wake up sweaty. [...] I haven't been able to sleep on my right side for long at a time, because my legs hurt more on that side, but I can alternate sides now. It's nice to have a choice again! Even my dreams are better!”

That’s one impressive review.

Ballister said-

“The wife was experiencing leg pain on our old mattress, which was a high-end memory foam mattress. We tried this out and she consistently wakes up with no pain; seems to support more firmly and more properly. I find it comfortable without getting too warm, and also find it supportive without being overly firm. Good product.”

However, there was again some talk about how this is more firm than a traditional mattress that provides plush comfort through a pillowtop. Memory foam is noted as a firmer material and it can be warm to some it depends on how hot you get when you sleep.

As we’ve discussed with several more firm or medium comfort level memory foam mattresses, they can be too firm for a side or stomach sleeper. This mattress is best for those who need firm back support, like a back sleeper, and for those who don’t wish to sink far into the mattress before the springs bounce back. If you’re concerned about sinking into this mattress, we suggest that customers that consider themselves heavy or who sleep on their back most of the time avoid the plush mattress and go with the firm option.

When you are a back sleeper, and especially if you share a bed, this mattress can be a very good fit in either of the firm or plush models. If your partner needs a bit more give, we suggest the plush mattress.
